Champaign City Council Accepting Applications to Fill District 3 Seat

The City of Champaign is now accepting applications from residents interested in filling the upcoming vacancy in the District 3 Council office. Applications are available on the City’s website (ci.champaign.il.us/council) and in the Mayor’s Office (Champaign City Building, 102 N Neil Street). Completed applications must be received in the Mayor’s Office by 12:00 p.m. on June 13, 2016.

Qualified applicants for the District 3 Council seat must:

  • Have resided in Champaign’s Council District 3 for at least one year preceding the appointment.
  • Be a qualified elector.
  • Be current in payments of taxes/debts due the City of Champaign.
  • Not have been convicted of infamous and certain other crimes.

The Champaign City Council will review the applications and subsequently interview qualified applicants during a Study Session meeting on June 28, 2016. The City Council is expected to appoint someone to fill the vacancy at their regular meeting on July 5, 2016. The appointee would fill the District 3 Council office until the Consolidated Election in 2017.

In April 2016, current District 3 Council Member Vic McIntosh announced he was relocating out of his district and would resign from the City Council effective June 1, 2016. By state statute, the City Council is required to fill the vacancy within 60 days of that date – or by July 30, 2016.
