Seattle emcee Grieves will perform tonight at the Highdive, and he’s supporting his fourth record, Winter & Wolves. He’ll be joined by Sol and local rapper T.R.U.T.H.

Jazz outfit Cownterculture will be performing at the Iron Post on Tuesday, a venue quite familiar with hosting this genre of tunes in C-U.

WHAT: Sharon Van Etten, Tiny Ruins

WHEN: Tuesday, October 14th at 8:30 p.m.

Second of three Pygmalion Festival Show Series installments, Sharon Van Etten is having a terrific year after the release of her wonderful new record, Are We There, which came out earlier this year on Jagjagwar. Highly recommend checking htat out, as well as her past material like Tramp and Epic. We’ll have an interview of Van Etten to run tomorrow morning, so keep your eyes peeled for that conversation.

Aaron Carter returns to the Canopy Club mid-week this week. The pop star is only 26, which is truly hard to believe since he’s been around for quite some time now.

Here is an open mic night of sorts, but with some live art and spinning by some DJs. Langston Allston will be painting while the tunes are playing.

Here’s the next installment of the solo showcases that have been lined up at Mike ‘N Molly’s. This one features Aron Stromberg, who you might recognize from his project The Superior State. Five musicians featured in October’s edition.

WHAT: Bones Jugs N Harmony, Kenna Mae Reiss, Samuel Payne

Bones Jugs N Harmony are releasing a brand new record, Party’s In The Kitchen, on Friday night. They’re performing twice, once at 5 p.m. and again at 10 p.m. We’ll speak with the band and publish it later in the week to preview this Friday’s release show.

WHAT: Doby Watson, ZXO, Single Player

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Friday, October 17th at 8 p.m.

Speaking of release shows — Doby Watson will be releasing his tape, Live-In Son, on Friday night as well in Urbana at Error Records. He’s joined by locals ZXO and Single Player.


WHAT: Thin Gin, Abbi Rajasekhar Trio, Tried & True, Jack Anthony & The Desperadoes

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, October 17th at 9 p.m.

Locals Thin Gin will headline this show at Mike ‘N Molly’s on Friday night. They’re joined by Chicago’s Abbi Rejasekhar, local rock outfit Tried & True, and locals Jack Anthony & The Desperadoes.

WHAT: A Cool Hand, Cheef, 6th Street Brass Band, Pete Stillwell

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, October 17th at 9 p.m.

Four bands for five bucks on Friday night at Cowboy Monkey. Local-ish outfit A Cool Hand will head this one up, and they’re joined by locals Cheef, as well as 6th Street Brass Band and Pete Stillwell. A bit of a variety for this bill.

WHAT: The Main Squeeze, Indigosun, The Ars Nova

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($8)

WHEN: Friday, October 16th at 9 p.m.

Funk outfit out of Bloomington, Indiana/Chicago The Main Squeeze make their way down to C-U. They’re joined by Chicago’s Indigosun, who fall within the same vein as Main Squeeze, and locals the Ars Nova.

WHAT: Finer Feelings, Penny Horses

WHERE: Memphis on Main ($5)

WHEN: Friday, October 17th at 10 p.m.

A couple of rock/indie rock outfits at Memphis on Main for Friday night. Finer Feelings released their record Gemütlichkeit earlier this year, and Penny Horses have been fairly active as of late.


WHAT: The Please and Thank Yous, Seismic Toss, Lucid, Old Fox Road

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, October 18th at 7 p.m.

This ALS/Prader Willi benefit show is happening on Saturday evening. It features The Please and Thank Yous, punk outfits Seismic Toss, Lucid and Old Fox Road. 



WHAT: Hot Cops!, Withershins, Action Adventure, Slam Dinner

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, October 18th at 9 p.m.

Local label Heirship Records will be physically releasing Jubilee this weekend on cassette. They’re joined by Withershins, who released Mt. Fuji In Blue earlier this year, Action/Adventure and Slam Dinner.

WHAT: Herobust, Wuki, Pleasure, Forrest Bump

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($10-13 advance/$15 door)

WHEN: Saturday, October 18th at 9 p.m.

DJ Herobust is on a bit of a tour, and he’s stopping through to Urbana on Saturday evening.


The Highdive ($13 advance/$15 doors) — Sunday, October 19th at 8:30 p.m. 

Serious amounts of metal will be taking over The Highdive on Sunday night after a couple of others the week before Pygmalion Festival. This one is another installment in the Pygmalion Show Series, and features excellent doom-metal outfit Pallbearer. They recently released their terrific follow up to their debut Sorrow and Extinction, Foundations of Burden, on Profound Lore Records. This Canadian four piece will bring it on Sunday evening. They’re joined by a couple of other great metal outfits in Tombs and Vattnet Viskar. Tombs released the intense Savage Gold earlier this summer and is also worth a few listens. Pallbearer has been recieving plenty of critical acclaim for this year’s release, and for good reason. Check it out and get yourself out on Sunday evening for some metal in your face.

WHAT: Earth Witch, Resinater

WHERE: Memphis on Main ($3 with Pallbearer ticket/$5 without)

WHEN: Sunday, October 19th at 11:55 p.m.

If you’re a true champion, you can rally and hit this show after Pallbearer on Sunday evening. A couple of local metal-ish outfits Earth Witch and Resinater will perform starting at midnight after the show at Highdive over at Memphis on Main. It’ll cost you a couple of bucks less if you have your ticket with you from the other show.
