The Overture: May 26-June 1

WHAT: Earth Witch, Acker, Year of the Bobcat

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, May 29th at 9:30 p.m.

The first show in a very busy week for Earth Witch is the only action on Thursday night. They’re the heaviest on this bill, but Acker’s loud-quiet-loud and YOTB’s post-punk are good compliments for this bill. It’s also YOTB’s last show for a while and Acker’s last show before tour, so get out and see them.

WHAT: Thundertruck, Resinater, Earth Witch

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Friday, May 30th at 7:30 p.m.

A lot of skuzz and fuzz rock happening all over this bill on Friday night at Error Records. Lead by Thundertruck, they will be delivering some heavy shit as the closer, while Resinater, the new Hank.-side project, brings stoner rock tunes. Plus, Earth Witch and their sludge rock will help out as well.

WHAT: Nat Baldwin, Megan Johns & Moonwish

WHERE: Mike ‘N Mollys (free)

WHEN: Friday, May 30th at 8 p.m.

Maybe you don’t know it, but you’ve heard Nat Baldwin before. If you’ve listened to Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, or Vampire Weekend, odds are you’ve heard this guy groove. Sharing the bill is Megan Johns and her new outfit, Moonwish. And since this is a Pygmalion Lit Fest joint, you also get some readings from authors Jensen Beach, Jim Warner, Roya Khatiblou. That’s ample reason to get to Mike ‘N Molly’s on Friday. The beer garden is extra motivation, in case you’re still not convinced.

EDITOR’S PICK: BLITZEN TRAPPER, THE PARKINGTON SISTERS, BLANK RANGE
The Highdive ($13 advance/$15 door) — Saturday, May 31st at 6:45 p.m.

The second of two Pygmalion Summer Shows happening this week — this one featuring Portland, Oregon’s own Blitzen Trapper. These guys have been playing their unique folk rock for more than a decade now, long before Portlandia made their bearded ethos cool. They’re still touring in support of their well-received album XII, but with their deep catalog expect a long and diverse set.

They’ll be joined by the Parkington Sisters, as well as Nashville’s Blank Range (featuring some of former-local act The Leadership). Definitely a good show to catch on Saturday night this week.

WHAT: Belly’s 30th Birthday, Swords, AMS(Chicago Il), TheGr8Thinkaz,  Jarrel Young, Misfit Music, T.R.U.T.H, DJ Wesjile, DJ Forest Bump

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, May 31st at 9 p.m.

So much to love about this one, especially the fact that it starts just a little before Blitzen Trapper ends, which gives everyone the chance to see great music ALL NIGHT LONG. This one’s gonna be banger, because Belly obviously knows how to throw a party. So get out and have fun.

WHAT: Roberta Sparrow, Braddock, Earth Witch

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, May 31st at 9 p.m.

Some punk and heavy rock mixed together for this show at Mike ‘N Molly’s on Saturday night. Three Earth Witch shows in one week? Madness.
