The Overture: April 15–21

WHAT: The Appleseed Cast, Muscle Worship, Withershins

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($10)

WHEN: Thursday, April 18th at 8 p.m.

The last time I saw the Appleseed Cast, it was phenomenal. One of the best shows I experienced last year. Just in case you missed that one, you have another chance to rebound and get out there to see them. They’re performing as a part of the Pygmalion Music Festival Spring Show Series on Thursday, and this is supposed to take place in the beer garden. Supposed to. Keep your fingers crossed. They’ve got a new album coming out soon as well entitled Illumination Ritual, so expect new material Thursday night.

WHAT: MartyParty, Vibesquad, Pademonium, Teriszega,Trickta, Hood Logic, CyberBully

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20 advance/$25 door)

WHEN: Thursday, April 18th at 9 p.m.

Dub show happening over at the hot spot for that genre in Urbana at the Canopy Club this week. MartyParty headlines with Vibesquad, plus a handful of other acts to support a long night of grooves. Price point is a bit high, but if you’re into this genre, it’s a lot of bang for your buck.

WHAT: Now, Now, The Lonely Forest, That’s No Moon

WHERE: The Highdive ($12)

WHEN: Friday, April 19th at 7 p.m.

Indie rockers Now, Now have experienced some success at a higher level over the past couple of years. Releasing a few records and gaining some notoriety for their last record, Threads, has done them well. They’re stopping through with The Lonely Forest and joined by locals That’s No Moon to support. Andrea will have a closer look at this show as she interviewed some of the band members. That story is set to run later this week, so stay tuned for that.

WHAT: Barrowe, The Stars, They Beckon, The Kickback, The Noise FM, The 92s

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Friday, April 19th at 8 p.m.

Another installment of the Five Bands Five Bucks series at MIke ‘N Molly’s being thrown down this weekend with a split release from Barrowe and The Stars, They Beckon. There’s the album art right there for the new split 7”. Those two locals are joined by a trio of others, including Chicago’s The Kickback and The Noise FM, and locals The 92s. Solid bill top to bottom lined up. Plus, it’s only $5.

WHAT: Dino Bravo, Estates, Uncle Sham, Earth Witch

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Friday, April 19th at 7 p.m.

Error Records is hosting its first show since their storefront opened up a few weeks ago. Although the storefront has been open, they’re finally ready to christen the show space that they have been dying to get up and running. They’re not starting things out quietly, either. Local sludge metal outfit Dino Bravo headlines, plus Estates, Uncle Sham, and Earth Witch certainly aren’t going to roll over for this either. Should be a wild night.

WHAT: Mhondoro, Cody & The Gateway Drugs

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, April 19th at 9 p.m.

Here’s an interesting bill going down at Cowboy Monkey at the end of the week. 6-piece outfit Mhondoro, who hasn’t performed in roughly two years, is taking the stage as they’re getting ready to go back on the road this summer. The band that plays Zimbabwe pop music. Sounds pretty awesome. They’re joined by another local outfit in Cody & the Gateway Drugs.

EDITOR’S PICK: RECORD STORE DAY
Exile on Main Street & Error Records — Satruday, April 20th, all day

One of the best times of the year is upon us here in C-U, which is Record Store Day. With dozens of bands lined up between Exile on Main and Error Records this week, you have enough music to see to last you a few weeks.

There’s simply too much to discuss here in the Overture, so stay tuned to our full-fledged preview of RSD 2013 and get SP’s guide on how to spend your day on Saturday. Get excited.

WHAT: Lydia Loveless

WHERE: The Iron Post ($10 advance/$12 door)

WHEN: Saturday, April 20th at 7:30 p.m.

Folk-country act Lydia Loveless is back in Urbana at her usual stop in the Iron Post this week. In a day that is dominated by indie-rock, this is a great alternative option. Joel interviewed Loveless and we’ll be running that story later in the week, so stay tuned for that to see what she has to say about returning to C-U and much more.

WHAT: Purling Hiss, Jared Bartman, Orbit Dangerfield

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, April 20th at 8 p.m.

Garage-psych-skuzz rock crew Purling Hiss is back in Champaign following their insane set at Pygmalion last year. I had only listened to some of their material before that show, and I was impressed. But after seeing them live, they absolutely bring it. They just released a new record this year entitled Water on Mars, and it’s awesome. I would highly recommend checking this show out, as well as that album.

WHAT: Beat Kitchen Brass Band

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, April 20th at 10 p.m.

Beat Kitchen Brass Band is set to perform a couple of sets on Saturday night in addition to performing at Exile on Main Street for RSD. Packed day for this crew. New Orleans funk and Mardi Gras tunes are what they are known for, so that’s what you’ll be getting if you’re over at Cowboy Monkey Saturday night.

WHAT: Black Coffee Fridays

WHERE: The Iron Post

WHEN: Sunday, April 21st at 7 p.m.

Local bluegrass outfit Black Coffee Fridays is set to perform at the Iron Post in Urbana this weekend. Not sure if there are others performing with them, but they’ll be releasing their new album, which is something to get excited about. Head over there to check out their new material and pick up one of their albums.

WHAT: Mansions on the Moon, Carousel

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($12)

WHEN: Sunday, April 21st at 9 p.m.

Mansions on the Moon are in the midst of a pretty massive tour across the country and are hitting Urbana towards the middle. Their touring partners Carousel join in for this Sunday show. If you have any energy after the behemoth of a day that is Record Store Day, this is a good one to check out.
