Feeling good at Yoga on the Patio

This past Sunday morning, local yoga instructor, Kristina Reese, hosted an outdoor yoga event, Yoga on the Patio, at Mahomet hotspot JT Walker’s. Reese was inspired to offer yoga sessions on the patio at the local favorite after witnessing the success of the Urbana Park District’s Yoga in the Park. “I wanted to create an opportunity for outdoor yoga classes in my hometown of Mahomet,” says Reese. After approaching the owner of the eating establishment about using the restaurant’s patio, the two settled on 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, “to keep it casual and encourage participants to stick around for brunch afterwards!”

While the weather can be unpredictable, Reese has found that offering a class in this setting has many advantages. She expounds, “The outdoor environment encourages a bit more playfulness and the fresh air helps cultivate a low-stress setting. In addition, offering yoga in an environment that people are already familiar with, in this case a ‘landmark’ location in Mahomet, is an opportunity to make yoga more accessible and sometimes a bit more fun too!”

The class was attended by broad spectrum of ages, illustrating Reese’s belief that yoga is for everyone. She says, “An array of ages definitely brings a lightness and positivity to class, reminding us all that we’re all unique as we are—there’s no need to compare, judge, or criticize ourselves or others.”

Reese also believes that yoga provides those who practice the art unique benefits and hopes through her classes she’ll be able to share her love with others. “Yoga reminds me that I can be strong when things get hard, and find calm when things feel out of control. I hope that through yoga others can find confidence and peace within themselves as well.”

While some may view yoga as solitary activity, with a focus only on the individual, Kristina sees a communal benefit. She puts it plainly, “The better care we take of ourselves, the better we can care for others and the world as a whole.”

The next Yoga on the Patio is set for August 2nd from 10.30-11.30 a.m. You can find out more about Reese’s yoga offerings on her website at www.kristinareeseyoga.com.
