WPCD to Hold 40th Anniversary Alumni Reception

CHAMPAIGN Ill. — WPCD 88.7 FM will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an alumni reception Friday, Feb 9.

The reception will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. in Room X125, across from the WPCD radio studio. Current students, staff and faculty from Parkland College’s Basic Broadcasting and Radio Production courses (COM 141 and 142) will join alumni and former WPCD staff to share stories, network, and speak on the air about the station, said WPCD radio director Deane Geiken.

“A lot has changed at WPCD and Parkland College in the last 40 years, and we are looking for our past DJs to come back to visit!” Geiken said. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the celebration.

Broadcasting an indie/alternative rock format, the noncommercial Parkland radio station has served as a hands-on learning lab for students enrolled in COM 141 and COM 142, helping many advance into professional broadcasting careers. Students at WPCD learn how to operate broadcasting equipment to create and edit public service announcements, promotional commercials, newscasts and other audio files. Other training experiences include regular on-air shifts at the station and participation in WPCD-sponsored promotional events.

Guests are invited to go online to parkland.edu/WPCDalumni to RSVP for the reception.
