Urbana Park District Hosts Auditions for The Music Man

Contact: Erica Cooper-Peyton, 367-1544, ext 206

The Urbana Park District will  hold auditions for roles in its Youth Summer Theatre’s production of The Music Man May 18-19 at the Phillips Recreation Center with performances July 25-28 at the Urbana High School Theater.

The Music Man is open to actors ages 9 to 18 and has a variety of roles available for performers. There are opportunities available to audition for a named role as well as for the chorus in this funny, warm, and touching musical.

Chorus auditions will be held on May 18 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. where the actors will be taught a number from the show and will sing and dance in groups for about thirty minutes. In order to audition for a solo role, please prepare a song not from The Music Man to sing; an accompanist will be provided for those who bring sheet music. These auditions will take place on the afternoons of May 18 and 19. Select performers will be contacted if they are chosen for callbacks, which include some script readings, dance auditions, and possible singing repeats and will be held on May 20. To schedule an audition, please call the Phillips Recreation Center at 367-1544. If you are unable to attend any of the scheduled audition times, ask about making alternate arrangements when calling.

The Music Man is a critically-acclaimed, award-winning Broadway classic, thanks to its quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations, and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads which have become popular standards. Made famous by the 1962 movie starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, and Ronnie Howard, this musical will leave you humming its well-known tunes and putting a little march in your step.

This summer’s production of The Music Man will be the 22nd annual performance in the Youth Summer Theatre series. The production will be directed by Kyle A. Thomas, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois. Tickets go on sale June 24 and can be purchased by credit card at 367-1544, in person at the Phillips Recreation Center, or from a cast member.
