University of Illinois professor Sheldon Jacobson was featured in an article on CBS Sports about resuming the college football season. In the article, Jacobson said that “he expects a 30%-50% infection rate of the approximately 13,000 players competing in FBS [Football Bowl Subdivision] this season. Based on his research, he also projects 3-7 deaths among those players due to COVID-19.”
Jacobson is quite the accomplished computer scientist (just check out his info page); he’s not alone in suggesting that returning to what was normal pre-COVID-19 is a dangerous endeavor. We’ve already seen the evidence of this in 14 players testing positive in Oklahoma. Are we willing to let U of I students get sick and possibly die just so we can watch them play a game?
