Tonight’s Champaign City Council Study Session to address food insecurity, mini pantries, and more

Champaign City Council has a study session on the books tonight at 7 p.m., which you can tune in for here, and they’ll be discussing food insecurity and the local efforts surrounding this issue in our community. You can read all about what’s on the docket top to bottom, and one point you’ll notice that’s being addressed is the mini food pantries that have popped up over the last year or so to help fight hunger during the pandemic.

The study session will address these pantries and how they fit in with the city’s code, as they are not maintained by the city at the moment. Per the study session notes linked above, “active enforcement of these municipal code requirements at mini food pantry locations has been on hold since last fall”, so they are seeking input from council on how to proceed with these pantries.

There’s quite a bit packed into the session, so check out the document above for the full slate, and tune in if you’d like to hear what they and the public have to say about this.
