The Sun King comes to Kickapoo Rail Trail

Weighing in at 750 lbs and reaching up to 14½ feet, the Sun King has now been installed at Kickapoo Rail Trail. Created by Decora, Iowa artist Steven Maeck, was installed at the corner of Main Street in Urbana, with the help of the district’s construction staff and representatives of the Public Art League.

“As soon as we saw the photo, we knew the Sun King would be a perfect fit for the KRT. Public art is exactly the sort of thing that transforms a trail into a destination” said Mary Ellen Wuellner, the district’s executive director. “We can’t wait for the public to see it.”

If you head to the other side of the county to Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve on September 12th, you can check out A New Leaf by Don Lawler, a gift through the Public Art League from Rosann Gelvin Noel. You can also see the unveiling of the new water feature at Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden. The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with hors d’oveuvres, music, and a cash bar. There will be a dedication ceremony at 6:30 p.m. RSVP by Tuesday, September 3rd to 217-586-3360 or
