The founder of Illini Hillel has been honored with a street name

Rabbi Benjamin Frankel founded The Hillel Foundation in 1923 at the University of Illinois, and it is has since spread to campuses across the U.S. and internationally, serving 200,000 Jewish students on 550 campuses. Now John Street between Fifth and Sixth will be designated Honorary Rabbi Ben Frankel Way, and Illini Hillel will be hosting a block party on August 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. to celebrate. The party is free and all are welcome. From the press release:

“Rabbi Frankel passed away at a young age and never got a chance to see the fruits of his labor,” Erez Cohen, the Executive Director of Illini Hillel, said. “An honorary street name and a block party with our Champaign-Urbana community is one of the greatest ways we can celebrate that legacy.”

There will be food available for purchase including Kona Ice, Dragon Fire Pizza, and Cracked, as well as inflatables, games, and music from the group No Strings Attached.
