October through November exhibitions at Figure One

Join us for the openings of Descent Into Darkness and Deadweight on Friday, October 17th, from 5 to 8pm. Descent Into Darkness is an exhibition of new video works by Coriana Close using her trademark video compositing technique, “video weaving.” Featured in Figure One’s main galleries, this immersive and woven video art installation appropriates YouTube videos to examine the relationship between corporate control and state violence, along with the impact those forces have upon people, their bodies, land and the environment.

In conjunction with Descent Into Darkness, Figure One will also be featuring MFA candidate Daniella Pavlić’s Deadweight in the Figure One project space. The exhibition examines the power dynamics of indigenous cultures in relation to national identity and transnationalism. Informed by the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-90s), the works displayed within the exhibition function as points of reference to guide viewers through the multiple narratives of displacement and violence imposed on Mayan communities.

On October 31st, Figure One will kick off its Hap·pen·stance series with a Halloween Party featuring the musical stylings of local DJ’s Kirkwood West and Reed Richards. Hap·pen·stance is a community engagement program designed to bring visitors together at Figure One for seasonally resonant events such as dances, performances, live music, and more. Tickets sold in advance are $5 for students and $10 for the general public. Entry at the door is $10 students and $15 for the general public. Ticket sales directly benefit Figure One programs and exhibitions. Ticket reservations and inquiries should be directed to

Moreover, as part of its commitment to bridge the gap between the local and university communities, Figure One is proud to partner with the department of Art Education at the School of Art + Design to present a community arts forum. The forum will be an open discussion about contemporary issues in art practice, art education and other topics. It will be held on Saturday, November 8th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Continuing is Figure One’s new book club series, Chapter One, which will meet on October 30 and November 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. Hosted once a month during the fall and spring semesters, Chapter One aims to bring visitors together to analyze and discuss a book they’ve selected to read together as a group throughout each semester. This semester’s selection will be The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery by Sarah Lewis, which examines how innovation, discovery and the creative process are influenced by unlikely sources and sometimes even failure.
