New Champign Central HS to be located at Interstate Dr. & Neil St.

After a bunch of months of deliberation, the Board of Education has purchased the land for the new location of Champaign Central High School. Please, discuss and let us know your thoughts on this location.

From the press release:

At a special meeting Monday night, the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of 80 acres of land for a new high school on Interstate Drive next to the Ashland Park subdivision.

The purchase price for the land amounted to $3.2 million. The District will use funds set aside from the county-wide 1% sales tax for the purchase of new land, and will seek to supplement these funds with the sale of excess property. The Promises Made, Promises Kept Committee, comprised of community members, has been overseeing the funds from the 1% sales tax to ensure they are being used as promised.

While the purchase of the land will be funded through existing funding streams, a referendum would be required to fund the construction of the new high school facility. Moving forward, the Board and Administration will work with the Central students, parents, and faculty as well as community partners to more clearly define the programs the new school would support. Capacity and programmatic needs will determine the cost of constructing the new school. In the coming months, the Board will also present to the community a plan for the current Central High School as well as an updated long-term District facilities plan.
