In this podcast:

  • On Monday, March 7, at 4:30 p.m., David and Cindy Combs were riding their tandem bicycle on a rural road north of Bondville when they were struck from behind by a Honda Accord driven by Errol Maul of Tolono. Cindy was pronounced dead at the scene, and David remains in critical condition at Carle Hospital. Joel Gillespie spoke with local bicycle advocate Sue Jones about this incident.
  • SP Contributor Annie Weisner discusses the legal implications of the Combs case and compares it to other recent car on bicycle incidents that she investigated for Smile Politely. Weisner is currently working on an article for SP about the Combs’ accident.
  • Mark Laughlin speaks with retired Millikin professor Dan Guillory. Dr. Guillory is an expert on Abraham Lincoln and is the author of the recently published book People and Places in the Land of Lincoln. Mark asks Dr. Guillory what Abe would have to say about various current events if he were alive today.

This week’s episode was hosted by Jason Brown. The above picture of Cindy and David Combs taken by Jennifer Schrad at the Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign Pledge Rally at the University of Illinois on March 3, 2010 in front of the Union.
