The Overture: October 14-20

WHAT: Call of the Void, Doomsayer, Meth Dealer

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Monday, October 14th at 8 p.m.

Hardcore punk outfit Call of the Void headlines this show at Error Records tonight. They’ll be joined by Error’s own Nathan Landolt’s band Doomsayer, who has been pretty busy with shows as of late. Also — no, this isn’t a Breaking Bad sort of thing with the third band on the bill. The band is called Meth Dealer, and they’re a hardcore outfit from our very state.

WHAT: Big Gigantic, Minnesota, Positive Vibr8ions

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20.50 advance/$25 door)

WHEN: Monday, October 14th at 8:30 p.m.

Big Gigantic is the project of Boulder, Colorado’s saxophonist/producer, Dominic Lalli, and drummer, Jeremy Salken. The two piece has settled up in the Canopy Club before and are back in town again tonight for a show as a part of their Sky High Tour. They’re joined by Minnesota and local Positive Vibr8ions.

EDITOR’S PICK: NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, ELF POWER
The Canopy Club ($37) — Tuesday, October 15th at 8:30 p.m.

This one is a no-brainer pick for the week, if you were lucky (or quick) enough to grab tickets when they basically sold out in the blink of an eye when they went on sale back in May. The reunited Neutral Milk Hotel is on a massive world tour, and we’re fortunate enough to have them stopping through to the Canopy Club. Although lead man Jeff Mangum has performed shows over the past several years, this touring band will feature Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes, the lineup that came together following the release of On Avery Island in 1996. Oh, how we can’t wait for Tuesday to arrive.

WHAT: Krewella, Seven Lions, Candyland, Milk N Cookies

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20 advance/$23 door)

WHEN: Wednesday, October 16th at 9 p.m.

Three pretty massive shows all this week at the Canopy Club, and this one on Wednesday night will feature a bit different scene than you will see at Neutral Milk Hotel, to say the least. DJs and womp womping all around for this Krewella show.

WHAT: Savoy, LoBounce

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($15)

WHEN: Thursday, October 17th at 10 p.m.

Savoy is on tour, which they’re calling their Get Lazer’d Tour. Plenty of Lazers have come through C-U in the past couple of weeks, no doubt. They also hail from Boulder, Colorado, which is where Big G is from and plays a few days prior to this show on Thursday night.

WHAT: Elsinore, Cody Sokolski, We the Animals

WHERE: The Highdive ($10)

WHEN: Friday, October 18th at 7 p.m.

Big show on Friday night for locals Elsinore, as their brand new album Push/Pull gets its official release on Parasol tomorrow. Our very own David Kierski took a good look at the record on Friday afternoon. You can also stream the new album over at Paste. Head over and see the show and grab a copy of the album from them on Friday night. They’ll be joined by Cody Sokolski, and a new outfit called We The Animals, consisting of Take Care/Barrowe’s Mark Wyman, Kayla Brown, Mikael Bracket (Midstress/The Annas) and Joe Funderburk. Really solid show.

WHAT: Lonely Trailer, Waxeater, The ACME Principle

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, October 18th at 8 p.m.

Local rockers Lonely Trailer take the stage at Mike ‘N Molly’s this Friday night alongside a few others. Brendan did a pretty in-depth feature on the band a short while back, so check that out in preparation for this show.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Twiddle, Soap, Zaramela

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($8 advance/$10 door)

WHEN: Friday, October 18th at 9 p.m.

Jam outfit Twiddle is in town to roundout the week at Canopy Club. A huge week for that venue, no doubt. Twiddle is on their Nice Crispy Bacon Tour, and no, I’m not making that up. No word on whether or not bacon will be present at the show. The only way to find out for sure is by going to the show yourself. Please, if there is bacon at the show, post to the SPlog.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Psalm One, MC Longshot, Jay Moses, Klevah, Reese T, Autochamp, Fluff Nasty, DJ Belly

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, October 18th at 10 p.m.

Pretty cool hip-hop show happening over at Cowboy Monkey on Friday night. Show starts a bit later than the rest, so heading over there after some of these others might be the best bet. Sarah will take a closer look at the show later in the week.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: The Curses

WHERE: The Iron Post ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, October 19th at 6 p.m.

C-U folk rockers the Curses will take the stage for an earlier show on Saturday night at the Iron Post. They’re in their element over at that venue, so it should be a good one.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, A Great Big Pile of Leaves

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($10)

WHEN: Saturday, October 19th at 8 p.m.

Someone Still Loves Your Boris Yeltsin have a new album out on Polyvinyl called Fly By Wire, and they’re making their first appearance in C-U since Pygmalion 2011. The album art is pictured here, and this should be a god one on Saturday night. A Great Big Pile of Leaves is definitely worth checking out as well.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Netherfriends, Freya’s Revenge, Single Player, Pedestrians

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Sunday, October 20th at 7 p.m.

Shawn Rosenblatt, aka Netherfriends, stops through at Error Records this Sunday night. I did an interview with Rosenblatt when he came through back in 2012, which you can read here. He’ll be joined by Freya’s Revenge, and locals Single Player and Pedestrians.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Yellow Ostrich, Common Loon

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($10)

WHEN: Sunday, October 20th at 8 p.m.

Three piece indie rock outfit Yellow Ostrich stop through at Mike ‘N Molly’s this week. You can check out some of the new songs they’ve been posting recently over at their Facebook, and here’s one of them called “Marathon Runner (Welcome Campers)”. They’re performing with a new lineup, so that’s something to look forward to seeing on Sunday night. Not only that — Common Loon is opening. Yes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Here Come The Mummies

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20)

WHEN: Sunday, October 20th at 8 p.m.

Surf/rockabilly outfit Here Come The Mummies is back in town on Sunday night. It is just about as weird as it looks, as everyone is wrapped up like mummies.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: The Tossers, Roberta Sparrow

WHERE: The Highdive ($12)

WHEN: Sunday, October 20th at 9 p.m.

Pretty cool punk show happening at the Highdive this weekend featuring the Tossers. They hail from Chicago, and you could put them in the same conversations as bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. That type of music. They’re joined by local punks Roberta Sparrow.
