The Overture: November 25-December 1

The Overture is a rundown of live music and performances happening in Champaign-Urbana (and the outskirts) each week. All of the information is as accurate as we can publish; however, all shows and performances are subject to change at any time. Thank you for understanding.

Did we miss something this week? Have a show coming up you think we should know about? Email us at music@smilepolitely.com with the details.

Monday, November 25th

Parkland Jazz Combo

► Parkland College Second Stage Theatre // Free // 7 p.m.

Urbana Hootenanny

► Rose Bowl Tavern // Free // 8 p.m.

Single Mothers, Power of Dusk, Dead Rest

► nightshop // $7 adv, $10 door // 9 p.m.

This is one hell of a punk show to kick-off your holiday week. Ontario’s Single Mother is sharing the stage with Power of Dusk, Champaign’s own Hardcore/Punk outfit, and Dead Rest from the Chicago underground scene. From SM’s alternative sound to Dead Rest’s melodic punk rock, this show is bound to have something for (most) everyone into some form of Punk Rock. Photo from the Facebook event.

The Dry Look, Tractor Kings

► Rose Bowl Tavern // Free // 10 p.m.

Two of Champaign’s best, The Dry Look and Tractor Kings, will be playing a late-night Thanksgiving Eve show at the Rose Bowl Tavern. The Tractor Kings go on first at 10 with their alt-country, folk-rock stylings. DIY power pop hits the stage with The Dry Look around 11:30; but if you’re looking to tie a few on before dealing with the fam, you won’t be looking at the clock anyway. Thursday, November 28th

Hey, y’all; Ben, here. There are a few DJ’s playing around town on Turkey Day, but sadly I haven’t found any bands playing live, original music. Did I miss your show? Has no one sacrificed their time with family to help all of us avoiding time with our own families?

If you’re stuck with seeing loved ones (or just some people the cosmos saw fit with whom to make you share some genes), just know that I am thankful for each and every one of you who keeps the C-U music scene alive.

Friday, November 29th

Need a honky-tonk night to help shake off that excess tryptophan? New Twang City has a brand of quick-driving, hard-hitting country and western (the only two genres of real music according to some) to get you up and moving. Photo from the Facebook event.
