Bands are still TBA, so I’m not sure what the status on this happening is, but it’s usually a local band or two paired with some cheap drink specials.

WHAT: Joe Marcinek Band featuring Steve Molitz and Freekbass, Brainchild

WHAT: Exmag, Fillibusta, Pleasure, Forrest Bump

WHEN: Thursday, November 20, doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

Exmag bring modern slow jams with a classic retro guitar spin. Chromeo did it first, but this ain’t that bad.

WHAT: Solo Showcase with Mark Wyman, Jared Roberts, Garrick Nelson, Colin Patrick Mosley aka Colonel, Sam Cronenberg

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

The familiar faces of local band members show off their solo stuff at this $5 showcase.

WHAT: Will Johnson

WHERE: Champaign (house show) ($15)

WHEN: Thursday, November 20th, 8 p.m.

Will Johnson of bands Centro-matic and South San Gabriel is playing a house somewhere in Champaign, but you have to buy a ticket to find out exactly where it is.

WHAT: We The Animals, Finer Feelings, Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen

WHERE: TBA (house show) ($5)

WHEN: Friday, November 21st, 7:30 p.m.

Another house show with some locals in the area with a location TBA.


WHAT: Seizures, Illustrations, Life Exposed, 50 Year Storm

WHERE: Thee DeathTower ($5 donation)

WHEN: Friday, November 21st, 8 p.m.

Seizures and Illustrations are heavy hardcore bands from California and Texas perfect for anyone who hopped on and is still riding that Deafheaven metal bandwagon.


WHAT: Airacobra, Through The Eyes Of Tomorrow, Speedfreak, TBA

Heavy/black metal enshrouds the Canopy Club.


WHAT: Hathaways, Pageant, Sad Man

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, November 21st, doors at 8 p.m.

Locals Hathaways and Sad Man join Nashville’s Pageant for a sing-song soirée at Mike ‘N Molly’s.

WHAT: Penny Horses, Waterfowl, Teaspoon Hunter & the Firetones

WHERE: Memphis On Main ($5)

WHEN: Friday, November 21, 9 p.m.

Local country/folk band Penny Horses offer a more low-key Friday night at Memphis on Main


Cowboy Monkey ($5) — Friday, November 21st at 10 p.m.

This is the first ever Smile Politely + buzz presents show, and also an Heirship Records showcase. Come dig these local bands, and also keep your eyes out for a new Motes single to debut this week. Really, my unbiased opinion is that Motes are rad and this is my editor’s pick for the week.


WHAT: Krelboyne, Not For The Faint Of Heart, Rocket Mouth, Wolves To Whales

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, November 22nd, 7:30 p.m.

Locals Krelboyne are on a roll after releasing their new album Linger | The Light Fades. Catch them and three local high school bands in a showcase of young talent.


WHAT: Matthew Curry, Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($10 advance, $13 door)

WHEN: Saturday, November 22nd, doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

Normal, IL’s Matthew Curry is only 19 years old but he’s already been on tour with Steve Miller Band and has a supporting role with The Doobie Brothers and Peter Frampton lined up for the summer.


WHAT: Advance Base, Mike Adams At His Honest Weight, Easter


WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, November 22nd, doors at 8 p.m.

You may recognize Owen Ashworth as Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but he’s back with a new, and in my humble opinion better, solo project called Advance Base. Former locals Easter are also playing as a rare treat. We’ll have an article previewing Advance Base later this week.

The second night of “Memphest” continues in the same folk-rock direction. Keep your eyes out for an SP interview with Cpt. Captain later this week.

Zebec is the experimental jazz band of Chicago jazz master’s student Ishmael Ali.
