The Overture: March 6–12

WHAT: Reverend Horton Heat, Larry and His Flask, Goddamn Gallows

WHERE: The Highdive ($20 advance/$22 door)

WHEN: Wednesday, March 7th at 8 pm.

Psychobilly and rockabilly fanatics rejoice: the Reverend is in town this week. RHH & co. invade C-U and aren’t taking any prisoners. If you’re looking for a show that might leave you with a melted face, this is the one.

Listen: Reverend Horton Heat: “Psychobilly Freakout”

WHAT: Ava Luna, Santah, Jared Bartman

WHERE: Canopy Club ($10 advance/$12 door)

WHEN: Thursday, March 8th at 8 p.m.

Ava Luna is on their way to South By Southwest and are also contributing to the Pygmalion Music Festival Spring Show Series (which isn’t wasting any time in its first week) after performing at the fest last year. C-U/Chicago charmers Santah will be contributing their fair share of grooves, and Jared Bartman will be joined with an entourage on stage with the 20,000 Leagues Under The String Quartet.

WHAT: Take Care, Evil Tents, Amiel Rysdahl and Kevin Cory, Ryan Groff, Kayla Brown and Mike Ingram

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, March 8th at 8 p.m.

“Regalo por Korazón” is the benefit show for 3 year-old Kora Furguson, whose mother passed away suddenly in February. Proceeds from this event will be donated to a memorial trust that has been established in Kora’s name. Definitely a slew of artists that shouldn’t be passed up on an average night, let alone this opportunity to impact someone else’s life.

WHAT: The Soil and The Sun, The Palace Flophouse, That’s No Moon

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, March 10th at 10 p.m.

This Michigan octet (yes, there’s eight of them) bring their oboe, violins, cellos, guitars, accordions, percussion, piano, and vocals to Cowboy Monkey with the support of two established C-U groups. They must be thrilled to get out of their touring van(s), which are undoubtedly stuffed to the gills, to play some music.

WHAT: Victor Villarreal, Anna Karina/Anna Karenina, Meryll

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, March 10th at 9:30 p.m.

Victor Villarreal makes another stop through town after performing here a short while back. The Joan of Arc/Cap’n Jazz member just released Invisible Cinema on Joyful Noise Records in January.

WHAT: Grace Weber, Finer Feelings

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Sunday, March 11th at 8 p.m.

If you’ve happened to sit in any Starbucks recently, you might have heard Grace Weber a time or two and not even realized it. This singer-songwriter has had her music picked up by the coffee juggarnaut for their playlists and such, but that’s not why this show is a particularly attractive option this weekend. NPR and Billboard have given her some legitimate hype (even featured as one of Billboards “Artists to Watch”), and joined by a relatively new local project Finer Feelings, this one might surprise you.
