“When I’m Small” is just one of the tracks by the dream-pop/electronica duo Phantogram that you might recognize. The New York based group make music that can work for an evening of relaxed reflection or of steamy club dancing. Either way, they’re mesmerizing, and theirs is the kind of music that lends itself to the venue of Canopy perfectly. This show is definitely worth attending even if it means being a little late to work on Wednesday.

Oddball duo Dewclaw brings you another evening of jazzy, folky, loungey tunes mixed with weirdo jokes and improvisation all fit to please.

WHAT: Greensky Bluegrass

WHEN: Wednesday, March 15 at 8 p.m.

Greensky Bluegrass meld folk, rock, and roots music together for a unique sound. They’ve got a country feel mixed with spacey, jam-band-type improvisation. They’ll return to Canopy on Wednesday for another picking and stomping good time.

WHAT: Turkuaz

WHEN: Thursday, March 16 at 9 p.m.

The family-sized group Turkuaz has nine members who come together to make juicy funk and R&B jams. They’re known for an energetic and entertaining show sure to fully engage.

WHAT: The Bashful Youngens EP release

WHEN: Friday, March 17 at 8 p.m.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with some of C-U’s best roots and alt-country acts. The Bashful Youngens will be celebrating the drop of their EP Inflorescent, and they’ll do it with Finer Feelings and Tractor Kings by their side. This is also the duo’s last show in the area before the embark on a tour, so come raise a drink and bid them good luck.

WHAT: Watson’s St. Patrick’s Day

WHERE: Watson’s Shack and Rail (no cover)

WHEN: Friday, March 17 at 11 p.m.

DJ Tim Williams spins at Watson’s for St. Patty’s, which is a pretty good place to knock back a brew or two with some great people on the holiday.

WHAT: A Night Downtown for Our Nursing Home Fundraiser

WHERE: The Accord ($50)

WHEN: Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m.

Champaign County CARE are hosting this fundraising gala to raise funds and bring awareness to referendums to be on the ballot April 4th, which regard protection of the Champaign County Nursing Home. Your $50 donation includes two drinks, food, music, and access to lots of other events. Find out more at the event page.

Plucky Georgia singer-songwriter Hali Hicks puts her sunny disposition into her country music wholeheartedly. She’ll be performing at this show as a fundraiser for Villa Grove Softball.

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, March 18 at 9 p.m.

Canopy hosts an event featuring some of C-U’s best and brightest from the hip-hop world, including Truth aka Trouble, Chase Baby, and more. I’m guessing that “locals only” pertains to the performers rather than attendees – they’ll probably let you in even if you aren’t from around here. Visit the event page for the show’s full lineup.

WHAT: JD McPherson with Whiskey Shadows

WHERE: The Accord ($17 in advance / $20 at the door)

WHEN: Saturday, March 18 at 9 p.m.

JD McPherson is a rock and roll artist with a country and blues twang and a penchant for powerful covers. His swinging tunes harken back to his influences of Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Led Zeppelin, with a modern twist. He’ll be playing with Champaign’s own rootsy rockers Whiskey Shadows.

WHAT: Conscious House Concert No. 10

WHERE: Ananda Liina Center ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, March 18 at 8 p.m.

The tenth Conscious House Concert will feature singer-songwriters John Coppess, Nim Serrano, and Todd Hazelrigg. The revolving charity this time is the ACLU, and your $5 will go to benefit them completely.
