The Overture: July 31–August 6

WHAT: Tomorrow Is Already Here, Megan Johns

WHERE: The Clark Bar (free)

WHEN: Tuesday, July 31st at 7 p.m.

Singer-songwriter showcase for this week features Garret Gengler and with his Tomorrow Is Already Here project joined by Megan Johns. Tomorrow Is Already Here released Make Believe back in May, which turns out to be a pretty interesting listen and an album worth checking out. I hadn’t heard of this project until recently, but there’s some pretty good stuff to be heard from this guy.

WHAT: Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Jaik Willis

WHERE: Canopy Club ($8)

WHEN: Wednesday, August 1st at 9 p.m.

Get down at Canopy with this bluesy jam band outfit, sharing the stage with touring buddy Jaik Willis. In what has to take the cake for most interesting band name I’ve heard in quite some time, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band is truckin’ through on a string of their midwest tour dates this week.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

WHAT: The Chemicals, Icarus Himself, Anna Karenina/Anna Karina

WHERE: The Iron Post ($5)

WHEN: Friday, August 3rd at 9 p.m.

Wisconsin’s Icarus Himself venture down to this area of the midwest to play The Iron Post with a couple of solid rock outfits from C-U. This is the final date on a long string of shows on their “Bible Belt / Sweat Lodge” tour, so hopefully we can send them into their break from touring with a bang.

WHAT: Beeson Brothers, Coco Butter Kids

WHERE: Canopy Club ($6)

WHEN: Saturday, August 4th at 9 p.m.

Another jam filled bill over at Canopy with The Beeson Brothers on Saturday night with Coco Butter Kids. Beeson Bros will play a handful of other dates around the state in August and start things out in a place they are fairly familiar with. Coco Butter Kids are a two-piece that shares a lot of similarities with their bill partner, so expect some foot-stompers if you’re headed out to this one.

WHAT: Northern Magnolia

WHERE: Cafe Luna ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, August 4th at 9 p.m.

Folk-twangers Northern Magnolia is set to play Luna’s pretty great back patio on Saturday, which featured Psychic Twin not too long ago. A more unconventional spot, but definitely one worth exploring for other bands down the road. There was another act that was set to fill a spot in the bill, but that’s no longer happening, so it’s all up to these guys for the entertainment.

EDITOR’S PICK: COED PAGEANT, YOUNG READERS, FINER FEELINGS
Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5) — Saturday, August 4th at 10 p.m.

This Palace Flophouse side project hasn’t necessarily been on the side very much, if at all, this year. Coed Pageant is slated for another album release this week, making it their third installment of their season-themed EPs. We’ve featured their first two EPs on the site in the last few months, and this time around they’ll be releasing the appropriately titled Sundry Summer Eur on Saturday. Joining them will be Young Readers, Jordan Herrera’s acoustic folk outfit, which you can hear over at his Bandcamp page, which features a new EP he dropped a short while back. Another duo in Finer Feelings rounds this bill out.

WHAT: Texas Instruments, Sohns, Enta, Marathon

WHERE: Red Herring ($5)

WHEN: Monday, August 6th at 9 p.m.

Texas Instruments is not from Texas, but post-hardcore outfit Sohns is and they are joining a couple of locals over at the Red Herring next Monday. In what continues to be a pretty stellar run of shows that are happening on a weekly basis at this venue, Texas Instruments will hold this one down as the headliner, and expect it to get rowdy in there to turn your Monday blues around.
