The Overture: July 24–30

WHAT: Eva Hunter, Emily Otnes

WHERE: The Clark Bar (free)

WHEN: Tuesday, July 24th at 7 p.m.

Last week’s singer-songwriter showcase slipped by us, but this week we’re all over it. Here’s a duo of female acts worth checking out. Eva Hunter comes over from Bloomington and will join in on the fun with C-U’s Emily Otnes.

WHAT: Tractor Kings, Evil Tents, Broken Light

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, July 26th at 10 p.m.

West Lafayette, IN’s Broken Light makes its way over to play with a couple of C-U staples in Tractor Kings and Evil Tents. Broken Light is featured on the Pygmalion bill for this year, so get out there and see them before they stop back here in a few months.

WHAT: Anna Karenina/Anna Karina, The Cheaper Hits, DeathTram

WHERE: The Brass Rail ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, July 26th at 10 p.m.

Really solid bill happening on Thursday over at The Brass Rail. AK/AK is the most mild out of the three groups, but you’re in for a real treat with all three of these bands. DeathTram put out one of the best local albums I’ve heard all year with their self-titled debut in April.

EDITOR’S PICK: MY WEREWOLF DIARY, GOBLIN COLORS, LONELY TRAILER
Parasol Records (free) –– Saturday, July 28th at 3 p.m.

The first C-U Flea took place a little while back with a great lineup of acts, including Co-ed Pageant, Hathaways, and DeathTram. This time around it’s an equally as good group of acts, including My Werewolf Diary (a side project of New Ruins’ Elzie Sexton), Goblin Colors, and Lonely Trailer.

Considering all that goes down at this thing, it’s worth highlighting a little more this week. There will be a DJ, food, beers that you bring for yourselves, and all of the random goods and services that you can expect to find at a flea market. You’ll be able to go catch the bands and rummage around to try to find some cool stuff to take home, as well as visit the always cozy Parasol Records.

WHAT: I:Scintilla, GoFight, DJ SorceryKid

WHERE: The Highdive ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th at 8 p.m.

Chicago’s I:Scintilla stars in the early show at The Highdive on Saturday with fellow windy city band GoFight. Their new Skin Tight EP is on its way towards the end of the summer, so if you’re interested you’ll get to hear what some of those songs sound like.

WHAT: Seven Year Existence, Eminent Slaughter

WHERE: Canopy Club ($6)

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th at 9 p.m.

A pair of C-U metal crews taking over Canopy Club this weekend is not too far removed from the Central Illinois Metalfest that took place a few weekends back. Seven Year Existence stars in a pretty heavy bill with Eminent Slaughter and another band that has yet to be announced, so stay tuned for more details with how that bill will round out.

WHAT: Carnivale Debauche

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th at 8 & 10:30  p.m.

Carnivale Debauche, a unique band of burlesque dancers and vaudevillian performers, will perform two shows back-to-back on Saturday. If you have one of these showtimes in mind, you’re in luck. This crew has been around town before, and even performed as a part of The Great Cover-Up, as you can see in the video below. Wild stuff from this bunch.

Watch: Carnivale Debauche and the Comprehensive Lady GaGa Medly

WHAT: Sun Stereo, DJ Belly & Harsh, Hip-hop MCs

WHERE: The Highdive ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th at 10:30 p.m.

Here’s the bill for the late show over at The Highdive following the I:Scintella show earlier in the evening. Summer Mix-Up features a little bit of everything with Sun Stereo’s alt-indie noise mixed with some DJs and hip-hop acts as well. Sounds like a mixup if i’ve ever seen one.

WHAT: We Must Dismantle All This, Meat Mist, Dino Bravo, The High Life

WHERE: Red Herring ($5)

WHEN: Monday, July 30th at 9 p.m.

The Red Herring continues its run of putting together some awesome shows to host with this group on Monday night. Meat Mist are a thrash metal group from over in Kansas City, and The High Life are coming over from Ohio, so I guess C-U is what we can call the middle.
