The Overture: December 14-20

WHAT: Planes Mistaken For Stars, Take Care, New Strange

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($10)

WHEN: Tuesday, December 15th at 7:00 p.m.

This is the show of the week, at least for me. Originally from Peoria, Planes Mistaken For Stars have previously enjoyed success throughout Illinois before relocating to Denver. Earlier this year, they announced that they were going to start recording new material, and this Tuesday, they have a very special and rare night lined up at Mike N Molly’s. You don’t want to miss it.

WHAT: Solo Showcase w/ Skeletorn, Tim McGee, Maddy Marsan, Steve Swigart, Aaron Waldner, and Mitar

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, December 17th at 8:00 p.m.

Mike N Molly’s Solo Showcase is one of the best monthly events in C-U, and this week, they’re back, featuring six of C-U’s best singer/songwriters. For five bucks and a quaint atmosphere, you can’t really beat the Solo Showcase. You just can’t.

WHAT: Hot Hand Luke & The Sound, Bristle, The Acme Principle

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, December 17th at 8 p.m.

After catching Hot Hand Luke & The Sound at this year’s Pygmalion Music Festival at Exile on Main St., it is clear that (along with The Fights), they are one of the best country-inspired bands in town. This Thursday, they’ll be joined by Bristle, who have been starting to integrate themselves into the C-U scene as of late, and mainstays The Acme Principle.

WHAT: Motes, Spandrals, Windmills, We Have Ghosts

WHERE: Mike N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, December 18th at 8 p.m.

From their electrifying performance on the main stage of The Pygmalion Festival, it is apparent that Motes have become a local band to be reckoned with, and this Friday should be an exciting evening, as they come back to headline the intimate confines of Mike N Molly’s.

WHAT: Kilborn Alley Blues Band

WHERE: Memphis On Main

WHEN: Friday, December 18th at 9:30 p.m.

I love blues, you love blues, and everyone loves blues. Perhaps this is because it’s the root of a ton of popular music today, but regardless, the Kilborn Alley Blues Band are coming to Memphis on Main on Friday, and you shouldn’t miss it. Where is Kilborn Alley? That’s what I really want to know.

WHAT: Matt Poss Band

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Friday, December 18th at 9:30 p.m.

Matt Poss Band are a pretty long-standing collection of dudes who have built a massive following of late, and on Friday, they bring their Beans & Bullets Tour to Cowboy Monkey, which will feature songs from their newest album, which is a tribute to American Troops.

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: NxT, Rev Gusto

WHERE: Pizza M ($5)

WHEN: Friday, December 18th at 9:30 p.m.

Pizza M has started having shows, which is one of the best things on the books for Downtown Urbana, in my opinion. This Friday, they host local young rockers NxT, as well as Kansas City-based band Rev Gusto. Why not come out and see the (arguably) newest performance space in town?

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: New Souls, Deshawn Music

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, December 19th at 9:30 p.m.

New Souls might be the most fun band in town (right up there with Church Booty), and Saturday, they hit Cowboy Monkey for what is sure to be a night filled with some funk, some dancing, and a whole lot of Mike Ingram. What more do you want?

—————————————————————————————————————————

WHAT: Ode Vinter, Isle Nine Asylum, Arboris, Nethersphere

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, December 19th at 9 p.m.

Ah, metal music. Just look at that photo (but not for too long because it might start giving you nightmares). If you want metal in C-U, there’s no better place to start than Ode Vinter. Plus, there’s a band called “Isle Nine Asylum,” which is scary in and of itself. Spoooooooooooky.
