The Overture: August 9 – 15

WHAT: The Island of Misfit Toys, Warren Franklin, Sophie Crane, Mammoths, Bad Catman

WHERE: Red Herring ($5)

WHEN: Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 p.m.

There’s something about the weight of a five band bill at an AA venue that a bar show just doesn’t touch. And even if you’ve got great touring bands in the Island of Misfit Toys and Warren Franklin, a stacked local support card helps a hell of a lot too.

WHAT: Ferrocene 3, John Ridenour

WHERE: Indigo Artists Co-Op ($10)

WHEN: Thursday, August 11th at 8:00 p.m.

Jay Eychaner has been a fixture in the local experimental and ambient scene for years now, but he’s moving on to bigger and better things. Thursday, he’ll perform alongside Jason Finkelman and Water Between Continents’ Nick Rudd as Ferrocene 3, with special guest Johnny Ride on guitar.

WHAT: The Dirty Feathers, Secret Colours, Creepy Band

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, August 12th at 10:00 p.m.

Have you been craving new local music during the August lull? Then good news, because just showing up to this show will get you a Dirty Feathers CD with two new songs. Also on the bill are Chicago psych-gazers Secret Colours and Creepy Band, whose Facebook bio unsurprisingly describes them as “creepy rock ‘n roll”.

WHAT: Rusalka, Panel Van, Sophie Crane

WHERE: The HUB (Free/Donations)

WHEN: Saturday, August 13th at 7:00 p.m.

A great deal has been written and argued about the four year culture of a college town and how that affects local music, but Rusalka is the opposite example; a band who play when they can fit in shows during school breaks (they have members attending school in Chicago and Missouri). With that whole academic year coming up again, this is going to be the last time you can catch them (and Panel Van, with whom they share a drummer) in C-U for quite a while.
