The Overture: August 3 – 9

With school, work, family, and wondering if this summer thing is done, who has the time to find out about the best shows happening in Champaign-Urbana? No need to fear, because the editors at Smile Politely have taken care of it.

What: Piss Shit Fuck, Atrocity Solution, We Must Dismantle All This!, The Fresh Kills, Augmentor

When: Tuesday, August 4 @ 7 p.m.

Where: 1108 W. Church St., Urbana, $3 donation

We’re guessing this is the new home base for punk house shows in Urbana, and it features two bands from Tent City Records.

Hopefully, Piss Shit Fuck has offended you sufficiently with their name and won’t need to delve into further depravity to provoke a reaction.

What: Tyson and the Friction, The New Instructions

When: Thursday, August 6 @ 10 p.m.

Where: Cowboy Monkey, FREE

Can’t beat a free show, especially when Tyson and the Friction is involved. It’s a full multimedia experience, with old TV’s showing creepy old movies adding to the psychedelic vibe.

Meanwhile, Moorhead, Minnesota’s The New Instructions should be a fine complement with high-energy indie-rock stylings. Moorhead’s located right across the river from Fargo, North Dakota, so maybe they can tell you some stories about how they knew Chuck KIosterman before he was semi-famous.

What: Seasons After, Murder Cycle, A-Theory, Solaris

When: Friday, August 7 @ 9 p.m.

Where: The Canopy, $7

Among the many indie rock bands swimming in this little music scene are some really recent radio-ready hard rock bands. One of them is Solaris, made up of five locals, who have been making more than a little noise as of late. This week, they’re performing at Canopy, but they are also doing the promoting as they present Seasons After, another rising star in the national scene. Hailing from Wichita, Kan., this is a band that most are expecting to start drawing more than excited local fans by year’s end. Cover is a cheap $7.
