WHAT: OG Temple w/ LuKane and SPRK

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($7)

WHEN: Thursday, August 17th at 8:30 p.m.

In the first of back-to-back local hip-hop shows at The Canopy Club this week, resident duo OG Temple shares the stage with Carbondale’s LuKane, who will be making his way to New York on tour within the month. Definitely worth a nod if you’re free on a Thursday. (BH)

WHAT: Prairie Sky Music Festival

WHERE: Allerton Park

WHEN:  Friday, August 18th – Saturday, August 19th

In what is perhaps the most unique event in this week’s Overture, Allerton Park will be hosting their first-ever camping music festival this weekend, happening Friday night into Saturday. Come out and sleep under the stars in one of Central Illinois’ most beautiful places. (BH)

WHERE: Espresso Royale on Daniel St., Champaign

WHEN:  Friday, August 18th, 8 p.m.

Nectar makes their illustrious return to Champaign-Urbana this Friday with a show at Espresso Royale on Daniel Street, which is now throwing live music. At the very least, come out to see how they cram a band into that space – it’s gotta be really intimate! (BH)

WHAT: Sleeper Head, Marathon and Snayl

WHERE: Independent Media Center, Downtown Urbana ($5)

WHEN:  Friday, August 18th, 8 p.m.

Three different ambient or semi-ambient acts come together for a neat and rare IMC show this Friday in Downtown Urbana, including Snayl’s final show before Pygmalion and local favorites, Marathon. For sound enthusiasts, this is an ideal Friday night in C-U. (BH)

WHAT: The Bashful Youngens

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Friday, August 18th at 9 pm

Three awesome Champaign-Urbana bands take the stage at Cowboy Monkey this Friday, featuring the folk tunes of The Bahsful Youngens with support from Finer Feelings and Neoga Blacksmith (s/o Monticello). If there’s a local show to catch this weekend, I’d highly recommend it be the Youngens before they play Pygmalion next month. (BH)

If you are more hip-hop-inclined, check out Trouble Chasin’ who make their return to a spot that they have revitalized over the past year – the Canopy Club’s front room. It’s really amazing that Champaign-Urbana has a local hip-hop show every weekend now, and it’s a trend I hope continues. Jump in with this one, folks.

Featuring funk, soul and house, DeeJay Grapes and Disco Phil take over Cowboy Monkey for a fun Saturday night dance party, free of charge if you show up early. Plus if the kitchen’s still open you can get some of those awesome tacos on the patio between songs. (BH)

The last show of the week brings you a collection of electronic/EBM music. All the bands are on tour, ranging from Detroit, Denver, and Minneapolis. Come give these bands the audience the deserve after driving such a long way, just like school is still in session.
