WHAT: Record Store Day
WHERE: Exile on Main Street, Parasol Records, your other favorite record store
WHEN: Saturday, April 16 – pretty much all day
This might just be the biggest local RSD yet, with full lineups at both Exile on Main and Parasol Records. We’ll have much more tomorrow and later this week. But for now, know that you can go to either store at pretty much any point and see some awesome live music while you buy some rare (and possibly awesome) music from national acts. And a whole bunch of local bands/DJs are releasing stuff, including two mentioned directly below. Plus, Whiz Khalifa is making an afternoon appearance at Exile to hang out. My guess is that EoM proprietor Jeff Brandt is a little stressed out this week, so ease up on the whole WHAT RELEASES ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE! stuff.*
WHAT: The Palace Flophouse, You & Yourn, The Fresh Kills, Ben Campbell
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16 at 10 p.m.
Are the Palace Flophouse on your radar yet? (They should be.) This week they release their new full length, Bad Friends Forever, and my guess is a lot more of C-U and beyond will soon know about them and their soulful pop. This is the official release show for the album, so all the songs will be fresh off the stovetoop. The warm up acts run the gammit from the magical folk of You & Yourn to the screeching punk of The Fresh Kills to the whatever it is Ben Campbell from World’s First Flying Machine solo set sounds like.
WHAT: The Dirty Feathers, Common Loon, Take Care
WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16 at 10 p.m.
After playing in and around C-U for nearly a year, The Dirty Feathers are finally releasing a physical product this Saturday with their 7″ featuring “Echo Hands” and “Pistol Hills.” To celebrate, they’re having a show at the Monkey. “Echo Hands” has been a live staple from the beginning, but I was still a little surprised by how much it jumped out at me when I heard the recording. Local heavy-hitters Common Loon and Take Care will also be on hand. This will be a homecoming show for both bands as they will have completed a mini-tour through IL and WI. Hugs all around.
WHAT: Whiz Khalifa, Mac Miller
WHERE: Assembly Hall (GA Floor, A, B, C- $35; CC- $30)
WHEN: Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.
After spending the afternoon playing the “Steampunk NES” at Exile on Main, Whiz will light up the Assembly Hall (wink, wink, nudge nudge) as part of the Campus Conciousness tour. Khalifa’s been known to smoke the crowd into a . . . actually, let’s just end this right now. I was going to spend this whole little segment writing all kinds of weed inuendos. But forget it. Anyway, Khalifa’s known for smoking weed people. He’s also a decent rapper with a nice ear for a good melody. Also, the weed thing.
In addition, there’s the Ebène Quartet on Thursday at Krannert and this pretty decent looking Illinites Music Festival thing on Friday, but they don’t mesh with my Saturday theme.
* Jeff, if you’re reading this, can you message me about what releases you’re going to have?
