Local Music Roundup: October 2010

It’s time to take our monthly look at what the locals were up to while you were out galivanting with Itzhak Perlman.

Elsinore debuted two new music videos at their Pygmalion Art Theater show. One was an animated clip that we expect to be set free on the internet in the near future. The other was a video for “Breathing Light.” Watch it below. (Be warned that it will leave you yearning for those late August evenings that already seem so long ago.)

The video was directed by Brittany Pyle. And in case you missed it, the band is currently offering their Remix EP for a pay what you want price.

In related news, Withershins recently announced that they are offering their first album, Ariel, at a pay what you can rate on their Bandcamp site. That means you can go download its soaring soundscapes for free, (but you should probably at least give something). Get it here. The band is currently working on their next one.

And their good friends in Take Care are also doing some recording.  Here’s a link to an “in-studio” video that involves recording some drum tracks and a surprise appearance from Nick Foreman.

Grandkids recently dropped their debut self-titled EP. You can listen to all the tracks right now on their Facebook page and get info on how to order it. Check back later this week for a review.

Among other things, DJ Mertz is currently offering the mix from his Sept. 18 show at Boltini Lounge on Soundcloud. So good news for all you lame people who like to get the party started by yourself in your livingroom at 1:30 p.m. (I’m talking to myself here, in case you can’t tell.)

Want to see some footage from DJ Belly’s triumphant performance (with AMS) at last month’s North Coast Music Festival? Here you go.

Pygmalion was full of stand out performances from local bands. High amongst them was Santah, whose set inlcuded this take on “White Noise Bed” off of the album of the same name.

———
Jay Moses recently announced that he will be headlining a show at the Canopy Club on November 13. If you’re wondering why, it might have something to do with his recent eye-opening set as the warm-up act for Nappy Roots. Here he is playing with a live band:

Apparently there are dozens and dozens of videos online of people in Japan and Korea driving around to Common Loon songs. It’s oddly entrancing stuff. Here’s one of them filmed along the Japanese coast:

In local punk supergroup news:
(UPDATED) Not Waving But Drowning, a new screamo band with Diamond Stretch and
Commodity members released their first EP. Listen and download here. And here’s some video:

In addition, Terror Suspect (Fresh Kills/We Must Dismantle All This) played their first show 9/17 at JFK house.

And finally, several locals (and former locals) are featured in the second installment of the Mixtured mix tape series — put together by SP contributor Doug Hoepker. This one’s about “Songs that Would Have Cleared the Dance Floor at Your Senior Prom.”

Are you in a local band that does stuff? Let us know what you’re up to by emailing musicATsmilepolitely.com. This is especially important if you are in a jazz, country or blues band, because you people are hard to track down.
