Holiday Market Watch 2013: Last Minute Gift Guide

This week marks the last Holiday Market of the season. If you haven’t already made it to the market, this is a great week to attend and see all the holiday festivities. The market was very cheerful last week, so hopefully this week will be just as festive.   There will be a lot of great vendors for the market this week, including Sleepy Creek Vineyards, in case you missed them last week.

The holiday shopping season is coming to a close rather quickly, so if you haven’t finished up your list, or haven’t even started, here is my last minute holiday gift guide. Here are ten items for everyone on your list to help finish off your holiday gift list in record time.

#1: Nice smelling soaps. There are a few vendors with a lot of great handmade soaps and lotions. You really can’t go wrong with a gift that is designed to pamper. I also like the handmade versions because they are better for the environment than some of the petroleum-based stuff from the big box places.

#2: Holiday breads and cheeses. There are great varieties of breads and cheeses available at the market, including goat cheese for your lactose senstive friends, and gluten free varieties. Add in some olives or sun dried tomatoes in a basket and you have a lovely gift for anyone who eats…which is everyone.

#3: Dog and cat treats.  For the animal lover in your life, or just your favorite pet, load up on some excellent handmade, organic treats. My pup is especially partial to the peanut butter treats from The Cousin’s Dog Biscuit Company. I know Santa will be bringing a few to my house this year.

#4: Knitted items. Everyone needs a new set of gloves or mittens, or a new hat or scarf this time of year. The great thing about the market is that these items are one of a kind so the gift recipient can be assured that no one else will show up the to the holiday party with the same item.

#5: Local photography or art. In keeping with the unique theme, pick up a print or a hand blown glass item. There are some really beautiful items that would match a selection of decors.

#6: Wine. Local wines are now available at the market. Stock up on local wines for all your holiday parties or for gifting. Mix this one with #2 and you have an especially great gift!

#7: Handmade ornaments. There are a few vendors offering holiday items, including ornaments. There were some really pretty ones last week, and even a few options that can be personalized. These make a great gift to mark milestones, like baby’s or newlywed’s first holiday, or a university-themed ornament for a college student.

#8: Stationary and cards. In our digital world, it is nice to have some great stationary to send letters and thank you cards. The Living Letterpress always has some great options to choose from—especially if you are looking for contemporary items. I have seen some great photography print cards as well.

#9: Toys. There are a great variety of handmade and locally produced toys at the market. The vendors are easy to spot and can help you pick out something for the right age group.

#10: Holiday treats. Who doesn’t like cookies or candy? The Grinch, that’s who! You can’t go wrong with edible items for friends and family this holiday season. The market has lots of cookies, candy, sweet rolls, and many other items available. Some even come pre-wrapped!

From the staff at Market Watch, have a very happy holiday!
