Opening Reception for A Little Touched, But Otherwise Alright, 5-8 p.m., Figure One Gallery, free
Figure One is hosting an opening reception for an exhibition of works completed during their Summer Artist Residency Program. Jeff Horwat, a PhD candidate in Arts Education at the University of Illinois from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and Melonie Mulkey, a new Champaign Urbana resident who hails from Memphis, Tennessee, were selected as this year’s resident artists. Their residency at Figure One ran from July 15th, 2014 and through August 26th, 2014. The exhibition of works created during their residency will be on view from September 5th, 2014 through October 4th, 2014. Refreshments will be provided at the opening reception. (RP)
A Most Wanted Man, The Art Theatre Co-op
Based on the espionage novel by the great John Le Carré, A Most Wanted Man stars Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his final (and some say best) performances. Also starring Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, and Willem Dafoe, this tense thriller follows and German intelligence officer (played by Hoffman) as he and his team attempt to connect a murder to a possible terrorism plot. David Bazan, Cafeteria & Company, $20, 8 p.m.
OK — So, perhaps by the time this publishes, or you see it in the morning, tickets to this show might be sold out. No worries, as I will discuss it anyhow. David Bazan, known for his outfit Pedro the Lion, amongst his work as a solo musician, will be performing without a PA in front of a very intimate audience in the Cafeteria & Company space on Friday evening. Hopefully there are a few tickets left at this point, but don’t miss out if you missed him back in March. (PS)
SATURDAY, September 6th
Doughnuts, Ye Olde Donut Shoppe at Urbana’s Market at the Square, 7 a.m. to noon, prices vary
There are now at least two doughnut options at the market. After a successful showing at Taste of C-U, I’m excited to see what Ye Olde Donut Shoppe has to offer at the market. I was very much a fan of the cinnamon bun, and will be on the lookout for those this weekend. (JH)
Krannert Center Costume and Prop Sale, 9 a.m., Studio Theatre
A Krannert Center press release states, “We’ve combed through our costume and prop storage areas to make room for items that will be featured in upcoming productions. At this exceptional sale, hundreds of pieces from costumes and theatre sets will be available. Dapper frock coats, gigantic creatures, and wedding gowns have gone home with lucky buyers in previous years. What might you discover that you can’t live without? 5th Annual C-U Pride Festival and Parade, 12 p.m.-late, Downtown Champaign, free
The Uniting Pride Center presents the 5th Annual C-U Pride Festival and Parade, taking place in downtown Champaign this year. The festival’s events include educational workshops, a Family Fun Zone, and late-night performances at Boltini, Chester Street Bar, and Memphis on Main. Watermelon Sour, Triptych Brewing, 1703 Woodfield Drive, Savoy, 12 p.m. to 11p.m., $1.25/$5.25/$9/$18
As pumpkin beers are becoming available, say goodbye to summer with this delightfully bright, slightly sweet fruit beer. The notes of watermelon are distinct, but it’s not overly sweet. It finishes crisp and dry and will complement your grilled foods well. (JH)
Relay for Life/American Cancer Society fundraiser garage sale, 1505 W. Charles St., Champaign, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
In the past month you’ve probably participated in more fundraising activity than usual. Either you dumped a bucket of water on your head, watched a video of water being dumped on someone’s head, or posted a really snarky meme about how the ice bucket challenge was dumb. Well, since you’re in the mood for charity, please head over to the garage sale that supports another burdensome disease: cancer. SUNDAY, September 7th
Healing Works art exhibit, indi go Artist Co-Op, 1-4 p.m., free
These pieces of art were created by sexual assault survivors and their supporters. Sunday is the last day for the exhibit. This event speaks to me on a few different levels. First, it is an art exhibit by local artists. We need to support that. Second, these people have taken a terribly nasty event in their life and created art out of that. That is beautiful. Finally, I have no personal experience with rape but it is all around us and so I think it is important for us to become sensitive to victims. See more about the event here. (SL)
WEFT Fest, Mike ‘N Molly’s, 3 p.m., free
Head out and support your local community radio station — WEFT — on Sunday afternoon at Mike ‘N Molly’s. There will be live music, including Kilborn Alley, Jeremy Harper & Friends, and Jiggy & The Source, to help kick off their annual pledge drive to help fund the station’s existence. (PS)
