Smile Politely

Weekender: July 12–14

FRIDAY, JULY 12

Fiddler on the Roof JR., The Virginia Theatre, 1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.

Today is your lucky day, folks! You have two (count ’em, TWO) chances to see this exciting all-ages musical theatre production by Champaign Park District’s Youth Theatre Program. Advance tickets are available at the Virginia’s website, the Virginia Theatre box office, or by calling (217) 356-9063. (MG)

Wieners and Wine, Sleepy Creek Vineyards, 5–8 p.m., booze on you

Grab a friend and a lawn chair and go roast some weiners over the fire! You buy your drinks on site and Sleepy Creek provides the fire, meat, and toppings. They don’t accept reservations, so get there early to claim your spot. Feel free to bring some extra food, too. Just don’t burn your weiner. (JH)

The Copyrights, Hospital Job, Kowabunga! Kid, Bookmobile, Error Records, 7:30 p.m., $5

Punk crew the Copyrights bolster a huge bill over at Error Records tonight. The venue has been more than holding its own in hosting shows in town. It seems that they’ve been hosting 4–5 shows a week on the regular, so tip of the cap to Nathan Landolt and the rest of the crew that make these shows happen. Although I’d like to be drinking a beer or cocktail while watching a show, it’s not a bad thing to go to a show and not have those things available. Just the music.

The Copyrights hail from Carbondale, and they have more than enough material to shake a stick at. Take a look and listen for yourself. Springfield punks Hospital Job join in as well; hear some of their music at their Bandcamp. Joining those two are surf rockers from C-U Kowabunga! Kid and new garage punk band Bookmobile to fill this night out. Woof! Music is good. (PS)

Withershins, Bear Claw, Shores, Cassius, Terminus Victor, The Velvet Elvis, 8 p.m., $5

Damn, another stacked bill on Friday night happening at the Velvet Elvis, featuring a handful of awesome acts. Withershins, who’ve recently released a new single, “Patient Boy,” to the world, take the headlining spot. They’ve been on a short weekend tour, so they’re heading back to home base for a show. Cassius is an excellent new outfit, whom we spoke with on the site yesterday. Bear Claw hails from Chicago and consists of a three-piece, awesomely composed of two bassists and a drummer. Very cool. Shores come from Michigan, and hit you over the head with some major shoegaze/post-rock action. Local legends Terminus Victor released a solid new record this year as well. All great, great things lined up into one bill. Lush. (PS)

Labyrinth, Art Theater Co-op, Friday-Saturday, 10:00 p.m. | Sunday, 11:30 a.m.

You know, I’ve never seen this film. How could I have let this slip past me? George Lucas, Jim Henson, David Fucking Bowie … what the hell was I doing in 1986 that was so important that I totally let this film slip under my radar? Well … I was living in a trailer in Shreveport, Louisiana, so there’s that…

But, I was born again as a thinking human being in 1991, so why haven’t I rectified my inexcusable and shameful neglect of this seemingly glorious pop culture phenomenon? Sunday. 11:30 a.m. You’ll know where to find me. (TN)

SATURDAY, JULY 13

Carnivàle Debauche, Mike N Molly’s, 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., $5

Carnivàle Debauche returns to Mike N Molly’s beer garden this weekend to perform two shows. If you’ve never been to one of their performances, I highly recommend checking them out this weekend (and buy a t-shirt for only $10). Joining the troupe is Classy Combinations.

See Liz’s review of this wonderful burlesque troupe here, and look for our coverage of Saturday’s show next week. (TN)

Evil Dead: The Musical, Station Theatre, 8:00 p.m., $15

This is your last chance to see the Station’s bloody good show before it descends back into hell. Join Michael Steen, Christopher Terrell Brown, Smile Politely’s own Madeline Knight-Dixon, and the rest of the talented cast as they sing, dance, and decapitate in the name of musical comedy. Call (217) 384-4000 for reservations, or go to the Station website. This show has been selling out night after night, so act now! (MG)

And if you’re still not convinced, check out Vickie’s review of this play here. (TN)

Diva Show, Emerald City Lounge, 11:00 p.m.–2:00 a.m., $5

Come see the beautiful Drag Queens at Emerald City. I’ve been following these shows for the past few years, and I am always astounded by the amazing talent we have in central Illinois in regards to this particular performance art.

Emerald City features Queens and Kings every Saturday. This week’s performers are:

VIP tables are still available, and include cover and wait service. Text or call 552-9445 for yours. (TN)

SUNDAY, JULY 14

Kids Cook! Ages 811, Common Ground Food Co-op, 2–4 p.m, $15 owners/$20 non-owners (2nd kid ½ off! Parents are free!)

From the Upcoming Classes Calendar

This kid’s class is designed specially for kids ages 8–12. This interactive and fun class puts an emphasis on the importance of consuming vegetables and involves active cooking. Kids will participate in preparation (without cutting) through construction of the dish that we are making using the stove or oven. There will also be a gardening component to the class that will engage kids and teach them how veggies grow! Join Renee for this great class! Note: All minors attending classes at Common Ground must be accompanied by an adult.

Sounds like a great way to introduce the kids to cooking — and make a mess in someone else’s kitchen! (JH)
