Fueled by positivity and empowerment, Resist is hosting its third art event on Saturday, March 2, at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Packed into one day, Resist strives to bring the community together around the theme of art and resistance to raise money for local organizations that help lift and support marginalized groups of people. This year, RESIST will donate 50 percent of the artists’ sales to the following local organizations: Courage Connection, DREAAM House, R. A. C. E. S., Three Spinners and the IMC.
Resist features emerging and established artists expressing themselves in response to the current political climate. Motivated by the vast amount of participants in the 2017 Women’s March, Shannon Percoco and Katie Snyder organized Resist to unite the community and give back.
Percoco and Snyder remind us that Resist follows in a long tradition of art as activism.
“Throughout history, artists have responded to the turbulence of their times with artist expression. Today, we once again find ourselves in such historic times.
Art is transformative. It brings community together. And when we come together as a community, anything is possible.”
“We thought if we could come together for one day, as a community, around arts and resistance, we would feel a little bit less hopeless. But we wanted that to carry on a little longer, and the way to make that carry on a little longer is through the fundraising aspect,” Synder said.
Along with displaying and selling artwork, Resist 3 will feature makerspace vendors selling items such as jewelry, purses and cups. In addition to the makerspace vendors, RESIST 3 will have a bake sale (including Mexican ice cream from El Oasis) and live performances. This year, the live performances range from acoustic to acapella, featuring: Angie Heaton, We Wanna Woke Community Social Choir, Antwan Turner, spoken word, The Coneflowers and a DJ Set with Dance Music Therapy’s DJ KamauMau and DJ Terrance.
Although entrance to RESIST 3 is free, the organizers recommend bringing cash. Whether you make a large or small purchase, your proceeds help lift the community.
