Well, Popeye’s Chicken is opening in C-U this morning, and we have some fine folks that are on the ground for this momentous occasion.
Nothing like an ice cold Coors Light at 9 a.m.
As you can see, the parking lot is packed, as people are clammering to get in the door for fried chicken and biscuits when they open (around the time I’m putting this SPlog together, I believe). This is going to be huge for the Champaign-Urbana food and drink scene. I think we’ll finally be on the map.
Gotta throw around the pigskin in preperation for the opening of the establishment. Really gets the blood pumping.
Thanks to Andrew Kling and the rest of the crew for this footage. I’ll be updating when we get more information.
UPDATE: 10:26 a.m.
Mike Murphy has an update for us, as he’s standing in line. Clearly, this is a big deal for the citizens of Champaign-Urbana. Check out that line. It’s not even 10:30 a.m. yet!
UPDATE: 10:45 a.m.
Order #1, complete with Mardi Gras beads. Must be a real celebration going on over there.
UPDATE; 10:53 a.m.
A source is now telling us there are 40+ cars in line at this time for the drive-thru. More cars keep stacking up on Bloomington Road. The individual dropped someone off to go to Popeye’s from two buildings away, as it was difficult to get any closer to the establishment.
UPDATE: 10:55 a.m.
Things must be getting really out of hand at Popeye’s, as police officers have arrived at the scene to make sure no one does any funny stuff. Also pictured: this line is getting ridiculous.
UPDATE: 11:13 a.m.
Behold: If a God does exist, he works at Popeye’s Chicken. One of our fine on-the-ground reporters keeps us updated with his meal.
UPDATE: 3:25 p.m.
Even though I don’t have photo evidence to prove it, the line at Popeye’s is still all the way to the intersection of Prospect and Bloomington Road. Wow.
