Two awards honoring service in the cause of civil rights and liberties will be presented April 2nd at the annual meeting of the American Civil Liberties Union of Champaign County.
C-U Immigration Forum will receive the W. Ellison Chalmers Award for community service for civil liberties. Outgoing Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing will receive the Victor Stone Award for a lifetime of service for civil liberties.
“Our community is fortunate to have organizations and individuals who work continually to protect and expand civil liberties, and we are pleased to recognize their accomplishments,” said Champaign County ACLU President Carol Spindel.
The meeting is set from 3-5 p.m. April 2nd at Stone Creek, 2600 S. Stone Creek Blvd., Urbana. The topic for discussion is “Immigrants and Refugees: Where We Stand.”
Speakers will be Ricardo Diaz of C-U Immigration Forum and Brant Houston, Knight Foundation Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting in the Department of Journalism, University of Illinois.
Snacks and beverages will be served. Suggested donation is $25 per person or whatever you are able to donate.
