The 6th annual C-U Folk & Roots Festival kicks off this week — starting on Thursday with a performance from Don Lemons, formerly of Carolina Chocolate Drops, at Krannert Center. Local Ramones worshippers Bookmobile! might be a strange pairing with Anodes, who are from St Louis and deeply rooted in the Midwest DIY screamo scene, but both bands are excellent in their respective genres so who cares? Dripping Slits and locals Orator are also play.

The Great Crusades released their first album in 1997 on 90s Champaign label Mud Records. Now, the revived label that just dropped the Chicago blues-rock group’s brand new album, Thieves of Chicago.

WHAT: Feral States, Hunt Hunt Hunt Camp, Windmills, Coed Pageant

The alternative-prog potpourri that is local band Feral States takes the Mike ‘N Molly’s stage Saturday night with Hunt Hunt Camp, Windmills, and Coed Pageant, that local band that released four lovely EPs in 2012–one for each season, and a new one just last month.

“Rock for Humanity” is a charity fund-raiser concert for Habitat for Humanity. There are no tickets for this event. All proceeds go directly to Habitat for Humanity. Artists include DJ Autostep, Forrest Bump, Flow Theory, White Siberian Tigers, Marco & the Polos, Steve Meadows, Colleen Morris and Jimmy Patrick.

EDITOR’S PICK: ACKER, PEGEON, MARATHON + COMRADES
Institute 4 Creativity ($5) — Saturday, November 8th at 10 p.m.

Local mutant post-rock players Acker are playing a late show at a newish C-U venue, Institute 4 Creativity. Hot off their Pygmalion set, this is not a show you’ll want to miss. Especially because of the rare appearance of Carbondale’s strung-out pigfuck emulators Pigeon and of course Marathon. Lookout for an article about Acker later this week.

My Dad, Chicago mathy rock band, used to have three drummers but now they only have two. Springfield punks Soap Scum are always up to something. The Tomblands are not a band I really know anything about. But seriously no matter how many drummers, My Dad is going to put on a good show.
