From yesterday on the News-Gazette‘s site:
URBANA – A 16-year-old Champaign youth said he was upset over being dumped by his girlfriend and having been bumped by a man whose face he slugged last week.
Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd ordered that the youth, criminally charged with aggravated battery in juvenile court Friday for beating Mike Sola, 50, of Champaign, on Sept. 24, be held in the detention center until a status hearing later this month.
Delving into the context of this apparent uptick of black-on-white violence, and the accompanying coverage, is something that SP would like to partake in. Let us know if you’d like to write about it.
I’d also like to point out a paragraph later in the article:
The News-Gazette usually does not identify juveniles involved in court proceedings.
Except when they do, of course. Mary Schenk was the author of that article, as well. I emailed her and Julia Rietz at the time requesting clarification, and I emailed Ms. Schenk again today. I’ll update this post if I get a response.
UPDATE (2:20 p.m. Saturday): Mary Schenk responds: “We typically don’t ID juveniles but make the editorial decision on a case by case basis; depends on the severity of the crime.” Thanks to her for the explanation.
