Recent Urbana Poet Laureate Ashanti Files is the lead editor for Writers of Oya, a project that coaches adolescent girls, specifically girls of color, in using poetry as a form of self-expression and self-assertion. The poetry is compiled into an anthology, and particpants also have the opportunity do readings of their poetry.
Files is looking for middle and high school girls to participate in this free program, that offers both virtual and in person session. You can learn more, and register, at the program’s website.
