URBANITE, a dance showcase that we highlighted as the best annual dance program of the decade, returns on Saturday, May 1st in a big way. They’ll be staging their next showcase at Memorial Stadium, in partnership with University of Illinois Student Affairs, College of Fine + Applied Arts, U of I Athletics, Dance at Illinois, as the main producers Roxwell Curates and 2XS continue to move the dial on this fantastic event each year. Typically they’ve held URBANITE at Canopy Club, though due to the pandemic, moving this outside makes sense.
This event will have in-person attendance for U of I Students, faculty, and staff, which will be limited due to COVID-19 constraints, in addition to being livestreamed for more people to be able to view the performances. The show will start a “sunset”, so they’re saying roughly 8 p.m. Read more about the event below, and how to RSVP to attend on their website.
From the press release:
One year after being sidelined by the pandemic, URBANITE is returning on its biggest stage yet, debuting at The University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium on May 1st. Partnering with the university’s public health experts to ensure COVID-19 health and safety, UIUC students, faculty, and staff can experience this live dance showcase safely in an open-air environment, socially distanced, with masks required. Others can enjoy the experience safely at home, having access to a livestream of the show.
Dance, music, and culture collide when 15+ dance groups perform primarily hip hop choreography with additional styles featured from Latin to contemporary dance. Add in DJ sets, special guests, and additional surprises, and the experience becomes something not to be missed!
URBANITE is produced by Roxwell Curates and is also in proud partnership with The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Student Affairs, Athletics, College of Fine & Applied Arts, and Dance at Illinois departments as well as the SHIELD CU program for this event.
