The University YMCA’s popular Friday Forum series is moving online this semester, and explores “The State of Democracy.” All lectures are Fridays at noon. You can learn more about the entire series and find the Zoom link on the Y’s website.
Here’s this fall’s schedule of speakers:
- September 11 – Aaron Ammons, Champaign County Clerk
- September 18 – Nancy Flores, National Partnership for New Americans
- September 25 – Rebecca Nagle, award winning advocate, writer, and citizen of Cherokee Nation
- October 2 – Rey Wences, Organized Communities Against Deportation (OCAD)
- October 9 – Chibundo Egwuatu, Champaign County Bailout Coalition
- October 16 – Mira Sotirovic, Karin and Folke Dovring Scholar in Propaganda, Department of Journalism, University of Illinois
- October 23 – Gus Woods, Labor and Employment Relations, University of Illinois
- October 30 – Brian Gaines, Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Illinois
- November 6 – Jim Nowlan, author, journalist, and retired faculty, Department of Political Science, University of Illinois
This line up is fantastic, but I’m personally very interested in hearing Rebecca Nagle, whose podcast This Land “traces how a cut and dry homicide opened up an investigation into the treaty rights of five Native American tribes.” I highly recommend the pod, especially as a means to understand July’s McGirt v. Oklahoma Supreme Court decision.
