Well this is a bit of great news for local figure skating and hockey programs, as well as students and local residents. The University of Illinois Ice Arena will remain open throughout the summer months this year. In the past, the rink would shut down over the summer and locals looking to skate, play hockey, or play broomball would have to go elsewhere.
According to Dave Bagger, Lead Assistant Director, the rink will be open in 2015, closed during the summer of 2016 to install a temporary ice mat system and outdoor air cooled compressor unit. Plans for 2017 and beyond have yet to be determined.
Details on scheduling are pretty light at this point, but there will apparently be a Kinesiology course for U of I students offered from June through August.
