The University of Illinois and C-U have produced some stellar athletes in wheelchair and other adaptive sports. Many have represented at Paralympic Games, and brought home medals. Even so, there are plenty of people in our community and beyond that don’t know much about the scope of adaptive sports, and the opportunities available to the athletes that participate.
Derek Hoot and Martinez Johnson, both LAS alums and former wheelchair basketball teammate, are hoping their podcast Push Podcast: Wheelchair Basketball in the United States will change that. They aim to “open up wheelchair athletics and adaptive sports to people who have never heard of these sports and athletes before. This is context they are able to provide using skills and resources they gained while attending Illinois, including communication, critical thinking, and research abilities.”
You can read more about Hoot and Johnson on the College of Liberal Arts and Science website, and listen to the podcast here.
