A provocative play is hitting the stage starting Thursday, March 5th. John Ford’s controversial drama ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, under the direction of William Brown, will play March 5-7 and 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. with one Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. on March 15th.
The production, housed in Krannert’s Colwell Playhouse, contains adult themes and nudity and is intended for mature audiences.
From Krannert’s website:
For nearly 400 years, John Ford’s tale of treachery, revenge, and incest has been viewed as one of the most shocking plays in world theatre. Despite its age, however, the themes at work simultaneously mark it as surprisingly modern. Religion, sexual politics, morality, and justice are confronted throughout this post-Shakespearean drama. Drama critic Michael Billington notes that “the greatness of Ford’s play lies in the fact that it neither exculpates nor condemns its amorous siblings: it simply presents their passion as something inescapably doomed in a hypocritically religious world.” The balancing act of passion and ambiguity threading through the play makes for a deeply entertaining experience.
