School board meetings and elections in other parts of the nation seem to be very focused on what it means for students to learn about the history of race in our country and it’s implications today. Most of the uproar is rooted in white fear and grievance.
November 17th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Racial Justice Project and Religious Exploration and Engagement Program, both initiatives of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign, are hosting an online panel discussion entitled: Telling the Truth: Constructive Ways to Teach About Racism and our Racial History.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Don Owen, former Superintendent of Urbana School District 116 and current CEO of Lead for Equity and Engagement, LLC.
Panelists include: Keyarah Johnson, honor student at Urbana High School; Brandy Smith, Program Coordinator for YWCA and parent of two students in the Spanish Dual Language program in USD116; Elizabeth Sotiropoulos, Parliamentarian and school board member of Champaign Unit 4; and Nate Wahl, Restorative Practices Coach at Urbana Middle School.
