The Virginia Theatre season opens with a celebration on September 17th

The Virginia Theatre will kick off the 2022-2023 performing arts season with a documentary screening and street fair on September 17th.

There will be a free outdoor concert event with from 5 to 7 p.m. live music from Ian Shepherd & Friends, featuring Atrain, Kayla Brown, Ryan Byfield, Andrew Duncanson, Ryan Groff, and Dawna Nelson. There will also be food trucks onsite.

At 7 p.m., there will be a showing of Incident at Kickapoo Creek, a documentary by RC Raycraft about the Woodstock-inspired Kickpoo Creek Rock Festival held in Heyworth in 1970. From the press release:

The Incident at Kickapoo Creek Rock Festival featured some of the biggest musical acts of the era, including REO Speedwagon, BB King, Dan Fogelberg, Canned Heat, Ted Nugent, Country Joe & The Fish, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Michael McDonald, and many more. And while concert footage was limited, Raycraft’s compelling documentary captures rare glimpses of the performances along with extensive shots of that weekend’s events and their impacts on the community.

After the show there will be a Q&A with Raycraft, as well as an exhibition of memoribilia from the event. Tickets just $10, and can be purchased online, at the box office, or by calling 217-356-9063.
