Suzu’s, a Japanese bakery, is coming to Downtown Champaign

Soon there will be a new bakery filling the space at 114 North Walnut Street, previously occupied by Cream + Flutter.

Suzu’s is a Japanese bakery which will surely be a unique addition to our Downtown Champaign culinary landscape. According to owners Suzuko Enomoto, Nan Goggin, Jennifer Gunji-Ballsrud, and Alex Sentowski:

“Japanese bakeries are typically a cultural mix of traditional Japanese confectionery and western-style of pastry making. This combination of East and West will delight the eyes and palate with tailored tastes that are less sweet and introduce new textures and traditional Japanese flavors — such as: matcha, yuzu, black sesame seeds, sweetened red bean, sweet potato, chestnuts, kabocha pumpkin, and more to a western culture as well as indulging a growing Asian population in Champaign County.”

The bakery will operate with Chef Suzuko Enomoto at the helm. This will be her first American business, but she has years of experience in Japan, and has been a frequent collaborator with Japan House at the University of Illinois.

They will begin as a storefront offering their menu items to-go, but plan to expand to custom orders for weddings, showers, parties and corporate meetings and events.

Here is a peek at their menu. Stay tuned for an announcement about an opening date; questions can be directed to suzu@suzusbakery.com.
