State Senator Scott Bennett passed away today, Friday, December 9th. He was first appointed to the District 52 seat in 2015, after it was vacated by Michael Frerichs. Bennett was officially elected in 2016 and won reelection in 2020.
The Democrat was originally from Gibson City. Bennett and his wife were raising two kids in Champaign-Urbana. His website outlines key legislation he worked on; most recently, he introduced legislation to clarify the SAFE-T Act.
Bennett was 45 years old and is survived by his wife and two children.
