Spurlock Museum will be opening a new temporary exhibit in February titled Nikkeijin Illinois. It will focus on the Japanese American experience through the perspectives of University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff. Nikkeijin refers to the Japanese diaspora — people of Japanese heritage living in countries outside of Japan.
The exhibit will focus on historical examples of exclusion, and how they might be connected to the recent resurgence in anti-Asian sentiments, as well as an amplification of current Japanese American voices and stories.
If you are a Japanese American student, faculty member, or staff member at U of I, and you’d like to share your experience, you can do so here. Find out more about the planned exhibit at the Spurlock Museum website.
