Early reports are that two people have been taken to the hospital after gunfire broke out at Market Place Mall today. WCIA News is reporting one victim. There have been some unconfirmed reports that the police exchanged fire with the alleged perpatrators.

One of those who was shot was armed and shooting at others, according to Champaign police Chief R.T. Finney. It is not clear whether the second person who was shot also was shooting.

McCann said she was shopping in the store Forever 21 when she saw people running through yelling there was a shooter in the mall and people should take cover.
“We know that more than two people were involved in this,” Finney said. “Our best guess is we have the people who are responsible in custody or at the hospital.”

“A tragic event has punctuated what was an extraordinary weekend for Champaign. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s families.
