Graphic Design Student Juried Exhibition 2011
through June 16
Faculty lecture with Paul Young: “The End of Print?” Tuesday, June 14, 1:00 pm in the gallery
This juried exhibit allows Parkland’s graphic design, web design, and motion graphics students the opportunity to present their best work to the community and to industry professionals in marketing communication, advertising, and design. With the design profession expanding from traditional print media into areas like web animation, motion graphics, and interactive design, contemporary designers are often asked to solve visual communication problems for clients using various media creatively; the variety of student work in this exhibit reflects that shift.
During the May 12 reception, an awards ceremony was held honoring 2011 Graphic Design student achievements. A number of monetary awards were given; as students successfully solved visual communication problems for local clients, the clients donated money for these awards. In this way, the exhibit also highlights service learning, an important component of Parkland’s curriculum. The awards were given as follows:
Monetary Awards
The Dr. David M. and Shirley A. Jones Student Award for a work of outstanding artistic achievement was awarded to Natalie Fiol (Champaign). The Graphic Design Best of Show Award went to Benji Frazzetto (Champaign). The Fine and Applied Arts Department Chair Award went to Jamie Ye (Bejing, China). The Parkland President’s Award for Excellence went to Brandon Satterfield (Monticello).
Awards of Merit
The Frederic W. Goudy Type Award was awarded to Cassie Yue (Savoy). The Electric Pictures Award of Excellence went to Boston Fleener (Farmer City). The Luciferin & Luciferase Design Award went to Cristy Scoggins (Urbana). The Larry Ecker Award for Typographic Excellence went to Benji Frazzetto (Champaign). The Marketing & Public Relations Department Award of Excellence went to Kerry Cantrell (Urbana). The Surface 51 Award of Excellence went to Brandon Satterfield (Monticello). The Davis Award for Distinctive Design went to Joshua Stafford (Champaign). The Mass Communications Award of Excellence went to Benji Frazzetto (Champaign).
John Havlik Recognized
Graphic Design students and faculty recognized instructor John Havlik for his years of dedication to the program, as he is retiring this year. For 15 years, Havlik has taught and mentored designers who have gone on to work in some of the best firms and companies in the area. He plans to move to southern Illinois and finally make art for a client with unquestionably good taste: himself.
On the subject of Havlik’s retirement, Paul Young, Parkland’s Graphic Design Program Director, remarked, “The graphic design program would not be what it is today without the energy and dedication of John Havlik. He has helped raise the level of professionalism and creativity of our students to beyond what I thought was possible.”
Alums continue to count Havlik as one of their strongest influences, one relating that she “still hear[s] Havlik’s voice in my head” while designing. His impact on the design community in Champaign-Urbana has been enormous, and he will be greatly missed, both by his students and colleagues.
