I was lucky enough to see Old Fashioned this past Saturday in what may very well be his last race. The gray speedhorse ran second in the Arkansas Derby after a grueling stretch battle with Papa Clem, but looked well after the race. It wasn’t until Saturday night that trainer Larry Jones noticed the horse was a little “off.” An X-ray revealed a slab fracture in one of his knees, not a life-threatening injury, but certainly a career-threatening one for a horse with as much speed and talent as Old Fashioned. In person, Old Fashioned was a stunning colt with a princely air about him.
After his impressive victory in the Remsen Stakes last November, Old Fashioned became the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.
