You get a lunch break, right?
At 11 a.m. on Friday, March 11th, public colleges and universities from across Illinois will be meeting at the statue of the Alma Mater to make their opinions known about the state of our state budget.
Politicians’ inaction has put public higher education in far too much danger, and due to the lack of an FY 2015-16 budget, there have been layoffs and even campus closings. On top of that, Governor Rauner supports cutting state support of public universities by at least 25% and has been actively blocking the MAP grants that support thousands.
While so many public services are suffering due to the fact that no one will get any money until a budget is approved, this circumstance is potentially disastrous for the economy of our town. As a major employer, as well as the reason for nearly 50,000 students to live and spend money here, I cannot even begin to list the negative effects we’d suffer if this goes on much longer.
Then think about the other towns in the area, and what it would mean to them if their colleges couldn’t continue: Charleston, Macomb, Bloomington-Normal.
So take your lunch break outside next Friday, at the corner of Wright & Green, and show your support for public higher education.
